As unconscious material begins to arise from the Hermit’s meditations, we encounter the scars and “impressions” that have accumulated in our psyche. The ego has no authority or control over these forces of fate and karma, so everything feels in flux and we are confronted with the unpredictability of the universe, symbolized here by the figure of Mara/Yama who represents impermanence.
